HDPE Geomembrane Applications
A. HDPE GEOMEMBRANE DEFINITION
HDPE Geomembrane is a synthetic polymer membrane in thin, malleable rolls or sheets, with low permeability (K = 10-12 + 10-16 cm/S), used for waterproofing in earth and rock structures concrete
B. HDPE GEOMEMBRANE APPLICATION
1/ For landfill, thermal power slag dump: should use HDPE layer from 1.5mm to 2mm
2/ Geomembrane used in aquaculture: we can use geomembrane with thickness from 0.25mm – 1mm depending on the type of terrain, area, and actual application. The geomembrane helps prevent the leakage of harmful chemicals into the pond such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, acidic components, iron, and other toxic compounds. Thanks to this protection, the fish will grow well and reduce the risk of disease. HDPE membranes also help reduce erosion, allow easy removal of fishpond waste, provide a smooth harvest surface, and provide UV protection in tropical weather conditions. HDPE membranes have been used in many different types of fish ponds for either decorative or fish farming purposes.
3/ Geomembrane applications in energy: The process of burning coal for energy purposes produces many by-products known collectively as coal ash. Coal ash is also commonly defined as Coal Combustion Residue (CCR), Coal Burning Waste (left), Coal Combustion Products (CCP), or Coal Combustion By-Products (CCB). CCCR includes fly ash, slag, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) products, and boiler slag. CCR is one of the second largest waste streams after municipal solid waste. In the past, most CCR pits, or reservoirs, or surface landfills were built longer than existing power plants worldwide. Much serious health and safety issues have been reported regarding CCR storage, and proper design using geomembranes at the CCR facility reduces the potential for groundwater contamination and future costs. HDPE membranes are used in many CCR filtration projects, helping to provide the safest and most economical CCR treatment.
4/ Geomembrane applied to gas and oil exploitation: The bottom layer uses a minimum of 1mm HDPE membrane, the coating layer is from 0.75mm or more. To meet the growing energy demand, new technology has been developed to enable safer extraction of natural gas. Shale gas is considered a natural gas formed from shale rocks. By horizontal drilling and hydrofracking process, shale gas is released. HDPE geomembrane is used to make chemical tanks, linings, ponds to help store fresh water and return fresh water to the environment, thus helping to protect the environment during mining.
5/ Geomembrane Application in Hydropower: The hydropower industry benefits from the superior waterproofing ability of this material. Chemically inert, not affected by aggressive environment, long service life. Hydroelectricity using water power to produce electric energy is the most popular form of renewable energy in the world. Hydroelectric power plants generate little or no greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, hydroelectric systems are built in more than 150 countries. Since hydroelectric power plants require very large reservoirs, HDPE membranes provide a low-cost waterproof barrier system. Our company offers waterproof membranes with excellent technical properties from high elasticity, waterproofing, mechanical strength to tearing & puncture resistance, especially when in seismic areas. Geomembranes have been used in many of the world’s largest hydroelectric reservoirs and dams projects.
6/ Construction of artificial lakes: the system of built reservoirs lined with HDPE membranes (artificial lakes) have natural ecological features, such as the ability to raise the water level, and the humidity in the lake has helped promote full of developing organisms, attracting plants and animals to live (so ecology is a natural feature of water reservoirs, unpolluted reservoirs).
7/ Waste pit treatment: – Landfill is a common method applied in municipal solid waste treatment and environmental pollution due to garbage arising from landfills is one of the issues of concern today. – Survey results indicate that most landfills are small in scale and use ad hoc waste treatment measures. Therefore, the management of solid waste landfill, control and treatment of wastewater from cities and towns need to be studied and solved. – In general, wastewater treatment systems all have a disadvantage that they are only effective in each stage of landfill operation. Aerobic and anaerobic bioengineering systems work well only with wastewater from new landfills, but not with older landfills. – Using an HDPE waterproofing membrane to line the bottom of a landfill is an effective measure and follows standard procedures. This measure is to prevent leachate from garbage contaminating groundwater and the surrounding environment. The product has a durability of up to one hundred years, so it can treat waste water from landfills very effectively. – It is recommended to use HDPE liner from 1.5mm to 2mm.
8/ Membranes are used in the treatment of floating walls: Floating walls have been used since the 1970s mainly to prevent liquid loss due to evaporation in various applications and in agriculture. For agricultural applications, floating walls have been successfully used to contain dairy wastewater and agricultural wastes with enzymes and capture methane (can be used as fuel for production generators) and to control odors as well as protect reservoirs from external contamination by pollen, animal carcasses, bird droppings, acid rain, and airborne dust particles.
9/ Geomembranes applied in precious metal mining: Involves industrial processes for extracting precious metals such as copper, gold, silver, uranium, and compounds from ores. Because these processes pose a risk of contaminating soil and groundwater, HDPE geomembranes have been used for environmental protection in this field since the late 1980s. HDPE drainage pipes are installed directly, followed by a protective layer of soil in the piping system to help protect the liners during ore mining. HDPE geomembrane is the leading application for gold, silver, copper, uranium, and bauxite ore mining works.
10/ Geomembranes for Mine Waste Treatment: Mine waste disposal is one of the most important environmental issues in any mining project. This application is meant to control the storage as well as the environmental impact of waste products from mineral processing plants, waste dams, waste ponds such as those that often contain sulfides, metal waste forming acidic environments. Geomembranes have been used to protect and prevent soil and groundwater contamination.
11/ Geomembrane application in evaporation pond: This is an artificial pond with a very large surface area designed to efficiently evaporate water by exposure to sunlight. Evaporation ponds are highly applicable in removing water from hazardous waste, separating ore from water, producing salt from seawater and treating brine from desalination plants.
12/ Geomembrane application in the process of saltwater immersion: It is the natural process of treating saltwater. Seawater evaporation projects yield salts including chloride, potassium, lithium, and boric acid. Concentrated brine is pumped to the surface and stored in a brine pond lined with HDPE. HDPE membrane is an excellent choice for chemical resistance in the salt-making process. Saltwater desalination is a modern and effective method to provide clean water for consumption or irrigation. HDPE geomembranes are also used to line ponds where the desalination plant’s treated brine is soaked.
